Happy Shavuot!

QuickImage Category Ministry

Shavuot (Hebrew שבועות), ("[seven] weeks") (pronounced: shah-voo-OH-t)

begins at sundown today (June 1st) and runs through sundown Saturday (June 3rd).

Shavuot has many aspects and as a consequence has been called by many names. In the Hebrew Bible it is called the "Feast of Harvest", the "Feast of Weeks" and the "Day of the First-Fruits"

One of the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals; it is a major Jewish holiday; celebrating the giving of the Ten Commandments by God to the Children of Israel at Mount Sinai 49 days after the Exodus from Egypt, and celebrating the harvest and first fruits in the Land of Israel.

Greek-speaking Jews gave it the name Pentecost since it occurs fifty days after Passover, but if you don't count Passover, the holiday is 49 days after Passover, which is a jubilee of days.
